Character Name: Francesco Calvierri
Series: Doctor Who, S5 E6 "The Vampires of Venice".
Age: The Saturnyn equivalent of adulthood.
From When?: Well obviously after exploding.

Inmate/Warden: Inmate! Because he has eaten people, and been complicit in transforming other people into a different species against their wills and also attempting to sink Venice and he's kind of a bratty mummy's boy and he's not at all sorry.
Item: NA
Abilities/Powers: Is secretly a giant lobster monster (Saturnyn or Saturnynian, both seem acceptable) who appears and physically feels (even to himself) human thanks to a perception filter (an electronic psychic device). It also allows him to understand and speak human languages (he...has a British accent despite being from Italy...), although he technically only "speaks" Saturnyn. Both he and the filter also abide by classic vampire rules (he can be hurt by UV light, he is not visible in mirrors [and I'm going to say on camera] with the filter on, he has big pointy teeth when he is a threat, or is feeling threatened), but he is not affected by religious paraphernalia. He can breathe both underwater and on land, but must remain well-hydrated. His blood is technically capable of transforming another species into his species, but he's never done this alone, and seems uninterested in doing so in general. His physical strength and speed are the same as a young athletic human male regardless of the filter. He is an excellent swordsman, and is more technologically advanced than someone from the 16th century normally would be because he isn't actually from then. He smells strongly of fish when wet.

Personality:
Francesco Calvierri is vain. A lot of people are, but Francesco is sort of a special case considering the image of himself as perceived by the rest of the world is electronically generated and false, and he cannot see his own reflection. At least, not the reflection he would be vain about. This has created some amount of disconnect from his true form (which by human standards is a horrible nightmare), which he mostly only assumes underwater (where there are no mirrors and no one to be vain for as he is related to all remaining members of his species). It's not even his physical looks that he is vain about, since he doesn't know precisely what they are (a thing which does secretly both him). He knows he's good-looking enough: not devastatingly handsome, but not ugly, and that that is technically what his true form is as well, to someone who can judge it by Saturnyn stadards, as his human form is someting like a translation. He is not ashamed of his actual form, but he's not comfortable with what humans think of it. What he is vain about his clothes; about being graceful in his movements, and cultured in his mannerisms. He is vain about his presentation, and about how it is perceived. His sense of self is based almost entirely on other people's opinions of him.

Despite this, his relationships with others have, for as long as he can remember, been less than superficial to non-existent. There is an aspect of fear of being discovered for what he really is: not "a vampire", but worse. Francesco clearly enjoys playing it up as the idealized version of a vampire. He swirls his cape and lurks mysteriously. He obviously prefers to be seen as something which, though frightening, still holds some amount of appeal, as opposed to his true form which is simply frightening (to humans). He does not hesitate to feed on a Venetian in public during the day, but when one confronts him and the girls he and his mother have been converting, while he shows no fear of the man at the time, he is later agitated in conversation with his mother and wants to accelerate the time-line of her plan so that it will no longer matter if they are found out. And he is visibly uncomfortable when his mother's perception filter fails, and she appears in her true form in front of their servants, although the servants don't seem to be unaware of what they are. There is also the fact that his mother does see humans as less than Saturnyns, has raised Francesco to believe the same, and would therefor not have encouraged him to seek out and form any sort of bonds outside of his own family. Even his relationship with his brothers is not close: there are "ten thousand" of them, after all. They seem to be at a much earlier stage of development (the majority probably unhatched, because ten thousand is a lot of lobster monsters) than he is, as they do not seem to be able to leave the water, or recognize their mother with her perception filter on. It is likely he had little in common with them both because they were so much younger, and because none of them have experienced human society in any way, and would not be able to understand why he thinks the way he does, which is neither wholly Saturnyn nor human.

Francesco has had one close relationship in his entire life, and that has been with his mother. She is the only other creature who can possibly understand him (as he sees it, since she shares his dual hidden existence. In reality she probably isn't aware of how torn between two worlds he is, and would not understand it). He is deeply devoted to her in a nearly uncomfortable way. Her love is apparently enough that he feels no need to seek out any kind of affection from anyone else. He may fear rejection (he does sort of technically have a face only a mother could love), but he also does not claim any of the "brides" that have been converted into viable mates, who would not have rejected him. He refers to the brides entirely as belonging to his brothers, and takes no interest in them beyond initially approving of their looks, something he only does after his mother has approved of their qualifications, and something he probably only does to please her (because it does seem to please her). A single insult against his mother is enough to provoke him into a vicious fight, where insulting his appearance multiple times is not, and it enrages him so completely that his true form overrides his perception filter.

Along with "vampire", Francesco also plays the part of "human" rather well. He can be very charming, as a young nobleman in 16th century Venice would have been expected to be. It's all a little performative, but that was expected in high society at that time as well. He even has a trouble-making edge to him like a young man should: defiant enough not to be dull, but not so bad as to be truly criminal. This is all an act. Francesco is not naturally charming. Francesco is moody; petulant and more than a little morbid. He has grown anxious with his mother's plan, because he wants it to come to fruition and for her to succeed, but has likely never really discussed where he will fit in to things once it does, although this probably bothers him subconsciously. He is comfortable with where he fits in to Venetian society: he is rich, desirable, and talented (he is a very good sword fighter, and extremely graceful for any sort of creature, not to mention one which that is secretly an enormous freaky lobster thing, so he is also likely well schooled in dance and other young aristocratic pursuits). Once Venice had been sunk, they would presumably have turned off their perception filters for good, and cut themselves off from the human world entirely. Francesco would still have had his mother, and while he would have insisted that that would have been all he'd have needed, on a deeper level he probably would have been very unhappy, as everything about himself that he had taken pride in would have been taken away. He's not incapable of understanding this, but he also would have endured it because it was what his mother had wanted. He's clearly growing a little bored of the status quo they have made for themselves in Venice and is looking for little ways to strike out on his own, while still clinging to his mother's lobster apron-strings.

Francesco rarely interacts with other males (he is really only shown interacting with Rory and the father of one of the girls being converted into "brides"). When he does, he falls automatically into competition with them. However, he seems to genuinely enjoy this competition. He likes showing off his power (over the brides) and his prowess (as a swordsman). He also seems to enjoy a challenge. He likes it when both Amy Pond and one of the girls he and is mother are converting (Isabella) struggle against them. He's the sort of villain who values "spunk", even while he does not like to lose. He's a very sore loser.

The perception filter that Francesco wears to appear human does not actually physically change him, but changes the way people's brains perceive him, both visually and physically. He looks human, and feels human to the touch. His own brain is as effected by this as anyone else's, and it really does effect how he perceives reality. He physically feels touch differently with the filter on (for example: he can feel someone touching his hair, even though he doesn't actually have hair), and switching between the on/off setting of the filter is uncomfortable because it requires his brain to sort of "reset". Because of this, he almost always keeps the filter on, which isn't totally healthy. While he will profess to being proud of being Saturnyn, he doesn't really know what that is. He doesn't really remember his home-world, he interacts with his mother only as a human, even when they are alone, and while he does have certain Saturnyn instincts, they have been corrupted by the vampiric masquerade he is hiding behind. Saturnynians are predatory carnivores, but they do not need to drink blood to survive, it's just something he has developed a taste for because it helps ward off the feeling of being dehydrated all the time while tasting better than 16th century water (Gatorade having not been invented yet).

Barge Reactions: Francesco will initially be frightened to be on an unfamiliar spaceship, alone (he has never been away from his mother for more than a few hours), but will try to hide this fear behind aloofness and aggression. He will keep up the pretense of being a vampire for at least a little while, and believe his mother will come for him (somehow), and then be very upset when she doesn't. He will be pleased to see technology that comes close to what was available on Saturnyne, and won't have any trouble accepting the existence of non-humans or super-humans. Humans are fine too, and he's used to living in a place that is human-centric. He will be devastated that floods do not contain actual water.

Path to Redemption: Francesco's path to redemption is fairly straight forward. I'm tempted to call him an easy inmate, although what I really mean by that is that he will not require any specialized sort of warden: anyone could more or less take him on. To graduate he will need to learn that feeding on sentient species is wrong, and that just because you are more advanced, that doesn't give you the right to roll up to someone's planet and convert one of their cities into a habitat more comfortable to your species without asking, or convert that planet's inhabitants into your own species without their consent, even in the name of preserving your species. This is something that will begin to occur to him as he socializes more with people on the Barge, something he did not do on Earth, but having a warden that he can become close to will expedite this process. Once that is accomplished, someone will have to help him rectify the fact that he loved and respected his mother with the fact that she made a bad choice, and should have tried to save their species in another way. He also has some self-identity issues related to being very non-human, but raised mostly human, among but not by humans that will need to be dealt with. He also just generally needs to grow up a little.

He does have the added fun bonus that wardens will be able to physically see his progress, because the more redeemed he is, the less often his huge pointy teeth will be visible.

Sample RP:
She would not appear on the communications devices, as he does not, but he scans the broadcasts for her anyway: for a glimpse of her dark hair, or the unmistakable sound of her honeyed voice. She may have overcome the limitations of the perception filter. He can easily believe she might: mother is clever.

Every day that passes without a sign from her causes his anxiety to grow. His teeth grow with it. They jut sharply from his mouth, pulling his human face into something longer and distorted. He snarls through them and stomps petulantly around the replica of the receiving room he is for some reason being kept in. There is nothing to snarl at, but he takes comfort in these outbursts anyway.

It is only later that he realizes his error: that it is not dark hair or human language he should be looking for, but a hard-shelled iridescent tail and his native tongue, which is something like hoarse shrieking to human ears. That this would not have immediately occurred to him is troubling. He's tempted to blame his own filter for the fact that when he thinks of his mother, it is not truly her he thinks of, but a false image. It is doubtless why when he thinks of himself, he is met with a similar but more complicated situation. The device exerts its influence on his brain, after all. It is necessary for it to, so that he not only see two human legs when he looks down, but feel two human legs moving beneath him, instead of four inhuman ones and the numerous small swimmerets above them. Appearing human while still being cognitive of the dimensions and mechanics of his true form would cause too much confusion. Even turning the filter on or off, even if it causes not physical changes, is not without physical discomfort from suddenly existing or not-existing limbs.

The device is not to blame.

He resolves that when she comes for him, he will not tell her about this. About how he has gone wrong, somehow. He knows what to look for now.

But she does not come, and she remains resolutely dark haired, slender, and human in his head.

I'm not going to embed the B-52's song "Rock Lobster" here. I wouldn't do that to you.
